Happy New Year to all of our faithful friends and supporters of Love in Action. May God richly bless you with good health, the love of family and friends and happiness in all you do.

For many, this is the time of year to make New Year’s resolutions. This tradition goes back 4,000 years to the time of the Babylonians who made resolutions to start the year on the right foot and get on the good side of the gods they worshiped. Out of curiosity, I “Googled”  “percentage of people who make New Year’s resolutions”.  The results from several articles indicated approximately 45% of Americans usually make resolutions. This includes everything from losing weight, exercising more, spending more time with family, quitting smoking, etc. Surprisingly, not one article indicated resolutions to be kinder, more thoughtful, giving or generous.

However, in spite of the large number of people making resolutions towards self improvement in the new year, sadly statistics show that 1 in 3 will fail before the end of January. My feeling is that if we all focused more on being kinder, more thoughtful, giving or generous, we would all succeed in the new year! In fact, a wealth of research shows that generosity, whether it be giving of your time or money, can also benefit the receiver. It has been referred to as the “helpers’ high” caused by the release of endorphins in your system when you perform a kind act. This ranges from lower stress levels, resulting in lower blood pressure, a better attitude towards life and more years of life.

So this year, I would like to encourage you to please continue to give what you can to improve the lives of the children at Love in Action. Many local “snow birds” have come back after being away for several months and have commented on the changes they have seen in the children since they have been schooled on campus. They remark that the children are happier and more stable and calm. If you have never been a donor, maybe you can find it in your heart to become a donor. And please, I encourage you to spread the word to your family and friends and maybe they can find it in their hearts to give too.  After all, in the end you are not only giving you too are receiving.
